_Da Vinci’s masterpiece rendered in LEGO_
This sculpture is part of Ai Weiwei’s series of full-scale recreations of the Renaissance-era masterpiece, each with a unique color palette. The artwork is composed of LEGO pieces, lending it a quasi-pixelated appearance, thus calling attention to today’s digitized mediation of imagery.
_Last Supper (blue)_ (2022) pays homage to Leonardo da Vinci’s mural while incorporating elements from Andy Warhol’s silkscreen prints based on da Vinci’s paintings. During his time in New York in the 1980s, Ai immersed himself in American post-war art – and Warhol became a significant influence. .
In this work, Weiwei replaces the face of Judas with his own, following the art-historical tradition of self-inclusion. Thus, the artist positions himself as an agent of disruption.
